                       A brief message to my colleagues in healthcare;                        

Professional Awareness of  the Transgendered client.

A message to all healthcare workers about Transcare. It is imperative that we as a community and professionals be aware of the difficulty that TG clients experience in accessing basic health care that as human beings we are all entitled too.

Embarrassment and low body image/concept- The TG client is often too frightened to approach a health professional for guidance and treatment due to the fact that they may, and often are, treated with suspicion, alienation and misunderstanding. Some of my clients have been told, by their family doctor to, “Go find a gay doctor”. This attitude, luckily not the norm, is feared by the client and the result can have fatal consequences. For instance; the client may be too scared to visit the Emergency Department for a serious health issue, they will use medication obtained by illegal sources or from internet companies. This unsupervised use can and has resulted in serious if not fatal consequences.

All I ask is that everyone, not just Transgendered, be treated with empathy, that we treat as we would wished to be treated ourselves, without preconceived ideas and prejudice. If we don’t know the answer please be prepared to look and learn with an open mind.
